Setting and managing channel modes

Updated 22 Sep 2026 Support Operations

To maintain order, protect member privacy, and control how discussions flow in your AustNet channel, channel operators (ChanOps) use channel modes. These flags toggle specific behavioral rules for the room.

1. Core Channel Modes Overview

Invite-Only (+i):

  1. What it does: Prevents users from joining freely. Only users who have been explicitly invited via /invite or granted an exemption can enter.

Moderated (+m):

  1. What it does: Mutes standard participants. Only users with voice (+v), halfop (+h), or operator status (+o) are permitted to send messages to the channel.

Registered-Only (+R):

  1. What it does: Blocks unauthenticated connections, ensuring that only users logged into a verified NickOP account can join the room.

Topic Lock (+t):

  1. What it does: Restricts the ability to change the channel topic (/topic) strictly to channel operators, preventing regular users from overwriting room announcements or rules.

2. Setting and Removing Modes

Channel modes are modified using the /mode command combined with a plus (+) to enable a flag or a minus (-) to disable it.

  1. Enabling Multiple Modes:

Plaintext

/mode #channel +itR
  1. Disabling a Mode:

Plaintext

/mode #channel -m
